The martyr, writer and artist Youssef Dawwas, was martyred when a residential neighborhood north of Beit Lahia was targeted, on October 14, 2023. This also led to the martyrdom of twenty-seven people from his family. It is a described crime of genocide. Dawwas was active in the “We Are Not Numbers” initiative, which, since its founding in 2015, has been trying to document the suffering of the Palestinian people under occupation, away from linking it to the discourse of statistics that turns people’s bitter experiences into mere numbers. At the beginning of this year, he presented an article in English titled “Who will pay the price for the twenty years we lost?”, in which he goes back to the first day of Eid al-Fitr in 2022, and how Israeli planes destroyed their orchard. The article describes how his family tried to create an atmosphere of safety in the face of the horror that befell them, even if this was difficult. He says, “The family would rather die together than apart.” Whoever reads these words thinks for a moment that it is a prophecy, but in reality it is. A deep awareness of reality."
